VISAS FOR GERMANY

Aussies and Kiwis visiting Germany score up to 90 days visa free before you either need to apply for one, or leave the Schengen Area. If you leave the area for 180 days, you can come back for another 90 visa-free days. Too easy! 

While you might not need a visa, you do need to have:
- A passport with at least six months validity on entry
- Proof of sufficient funds in the form of a bank statement or cash
- Return airline tickets/proof of onward travel
- Documents showing proof of purpose of trip
- Documents and visas required for the next destination, if applicable

These rules can change quickly. Contact your nearest German Embassy or Consulate before you travel for the most up to date information.

ON ARRIVAL

Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin take in the majority of international flights, and these cities connect to pretty much anywhere in Germany via high-speed rail. 

If going from Frankfurt Airport to the city centre, the S8 and S9 S-Bahn (light rail) will get you to the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) in around 10 minute for less than €5. If going from Munich Airport, the journey to the city centre is 45 minutes on the S1 or S8 trains, while the trip from Berlin Airport to their city centre is 30 min via the RE7 and RB14 airport express lines.

GETTING AROUND

If you have the euros, high-speed rail is a fantastic way to see a lot of Germany very quickly. If you're a budget traveller, the slower, intercity trains are a great option.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

While summer can be warm, it is also wet, making the weather day-to-day unpredictable. Late spring and early autumn (May, September and early October) are a little easier on travellers who forget their brolly. While the crowds can be a little overwhelming, Oktoberfest (mid-September to the first week of October) is an unmissable experience for those visiting Munich.

If you're keen for a white Christmas, the ski season starts in December and goes through to the end of March. 

WHERE TO GO

Did you know that Germany is keeping pace with Florida, with seven theme parks which draw more than one million visitors a year? Consider checking out Europa Park in the Black Forest, second-largest theme park in Europe after Paris Disneykand. Other must visits for thrill-seekers and families include Phantasialand, Lego Land and Movie Park.

While we're thinking about theme parks, did you know that Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle is modelled on the Bavarian castle, Schloss Neuschwanstein? Get a train to Füssen, then a bus to the town of Hohenschwagau. From there, it is a 30-45 minute walk, or you can take a shuttle bus or horse-drawn carriage! You can also stop by the neighbouring Hohenschwangau Castle on the same day. 

Go east for the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve, a 45-mile long UNESCO-designated nature reserve. Explore on foot or by boat miles of waterways, swamps and lakes. Be sure to stop for a bite of the fresh local cuisine. 

Visit the south of Germany for the '5 Lakes' district, which offer swiming and watercraft activities, forest hikes and the Baroque Andechs Monastery (and its famous brewery!).

MUST KNOW TIPS

The first tip is that this isn't a place you need to tip. Germany has a living minium wage, so service industry staff aren't relying on tips to get them through. That said, it is polite to leave a tip of around 5-10% for good service - this is often easily done by rounding your bill up to a neat euro amount.

It's a bit of a stereotype, but Germans are a big fan of rules. Don't walk in the bike lanes, and don't jaywalk unless you want to risk a €10 fine!

The train tickets you buy are generally not time or date-stamped, so as with some other European countries, you need to validate them. It is very unlikely you'll be able to get away with pretending to be an ignorant tourist to get out of a fine.

Recycling is big in Germany. When you buy a drink from a store, it will have a 'pfand' (deposit) included. Major supermarkets have recycling machines which take your bottle in exchange for returning your deposit. If you're not going to recycle, placing your empty bottle next to or on top of a bin can make a huge difference for people who make their livelihood recycling.

Sundays are protected for religious and social reasons, so be prepared for most places to be closed. Why not spend your Sundays as the Germans do - with friends and family at the park, museum or just at home?

  •  When it comes to alcohol we advise you to drink in moderation. One too many bier could see you jeopardizing your cover. Please note that we may exclude any claims where excessive drugs or alcohol have been involved.

  • I have high value items; how much can I insure them for?

  • If you have an expensive item that you just can’t leave behind you can insure it separately for up to $5,000. Please note that high value item cover is only available under our comprehensive plan.

  • Am I covered for pickpocketing in Germany?

  • Yes, you’re covered for muggings and pickpocketing, provided of course you were acting with reasonable care (i.e. did not leave your belongings unattended). If you’re the victim of a pickpocket, you’d be covered for loss, theft and damage to your luggage and personal effects. If you are robbed, it’s important that you get a police report and contact us as soon as possible.

  • What age limits apply to Zoom travel insurance policies?

  • You must be under the age of 85 to buy a policy with Zoom. Those under 79 years can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 365 days. Those aged between 80-85 years can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 184 days only. You must also be under the age of 69 to purchase our add-on ski or adventure packs.

  • Can I reduce my excess with Zoom products?

  • Yes you can reduce the standard excess of $200 by paying a excess reduction fee within the payment process.
