WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT TRAVEL INSURANCE

If you're not aware already, travel insurance is a must for your trip abroad. Not only is it a solid investment against any potential medical costs you may incur overseas (and these can be seriously expensive) but it's a great way to ensure that you'll be protected against unforeseen events like natural disasters, lost luggage, family emergencies and more.

However, without sufficient clarity, first time or even seasoned travellers may find themselves vulnerable to common misconceptions surrounding their cover.

Natasha Sullivan, Marketing Manager for Zoom Travel Insurance says,

“There’s no doubt about it; travellers are simply more vulnerable overseas. There are expensive medical costs to contend with along with new and unfamiliar environments. We strongly believe that Australians shouldn’t travel without travel insurance. But it’s also essential that they understand any important exclusions that may affect their cover.”

A recent poll by Zoom Travel Insurance revealed that up to 42% of travellers say they didn’t fully understand how travel insurance works in regard to pre-existing conditions. A further 71% said they were unaware that they would not be covered for certain adventure activities unless they were to add additional cover on to their policies.

Sullivan says,

“Remember, no matter if you're about to embark on your first trip or your hundredth, make sure you speak to your insurance provider if you feel at all uncertain. Taking the time to understand the benefits of your travel insurance can ease any concerns you may have prior to jetting off.”

10 Common Travel Insurance Misconceptions

1. Cover starts shortly after you buy your policy
Cancellation benefits kick in soon after you buy your policy- not the day you depart. That means if an unexpected emergency arises before you travel, you may be able to claim for non-refundable costs. A short waiting period usually applies after you purchase your policy, so be mindful of that..

2. Not all missed flights are covered
Missed your flight in a last-minute dash to the gate? Unfortunately, simply running late isn’t a claimable event. Likewise, delays caused by aircraft maintenance, overbooking or mechanical issues usually fall under the airline’s responsibility—not your insurer’s.

3. Out of sight, out of luck
While cover is available for lost, stolen or damaged items, it’s also your job to keep your belongings safe. Claims may be declined if items are deemed ‘unattended’ - this can include belongings left in taxis, restrooms, or even on the baggage carousel.

4. Luggage limits apply
At Zoom, you can cover your luggage and personal effects for up to $10,000, (for all items combined) but note that individual, unspecified items are capped (generally at $750 each). Double-check your sub-limits to ensure your valuables are properly protected.

5. The earlier you buy, the better
Once you’ve booked your trip, it’s wise to secure travel insurance straight away. That’s because coverage for unforeseen events—like natural disasters—often excludes incidents that have already been reported in the media. Buy early for the broadest protection.

6. Details matter
Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Policies can vary significantly, so it pays to understand what you’re buying. Basic policies often cover medical emergencies only, while comprehensive cover includes cancellations, delays, and other extras.

7. Leave precious gems at home
Thinking of travelling with jewellery or luxury items? Many travel policies exclude high-value items like diamond rings. If you must bring them, consider insuring valuables under your home and contents policy for extra peace of mind.

8. Drink in moderation
Enjoying a cocktail on holiday is fine—but excessive drinking paired with risky behaviour can void your cover. As a general rule: if you're too intoxicated to act responsibly, you’re likely too intoxicated to be covered.

9. Thrill seekers, take note
Planning some adventure activities? Not all high-risk sports are automatically covered. For peace of mind, check if your activity is included—or consider adding an adventure sports pack to your policy.

10. Age matters in family emergencies
Comprehensive insurance typically covers your return home if a relative becomes seriously ill or passes away. However, limits apply. Zoom, for example, doesn’t cover family emergencies involving relatives over 85, or those with pre-existing conditions—regardless of age.

Before you go

Travel insurance can be a lifesaver provided you take the time to understand your policy. Taking into account all the various exclusions, making the decision to take cover when heading abroad can save you insurmountable costs. Research your options and think hard before you forego insurance; it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind!
